Bompas & Parr has worked with acoustic scientists to design and build a sound-based installation for Merge Bankside, that appears to connect you with the supernatural.
The installation by Bompas & Parr, Voice of God, uses voices transposed to infrasound, to give visitors the impression of a ghostly or divine experience. Hosted at the London Hilton Bankside’s indoor swimming pool, the sensory experience will use infrasonic vibrations. According to psychologist Richard Wiseman, the odd sensations that people attribute to religious and supernatural experiences, may in fact be caused by infrasonic vibrations. The effect is said to range from ghostly apparitions to sparkling lights and geometric patterns. Spectators to Voices of Garden are said to be likely to have a profound psychedelic experience.
“The system will be designed to look like a battling carnival soundsystem tricked out by a visionary medieval master builder. Architectural features such archivolts, tympanums and flying buttresses frame the speakers and subs. The architectonic speakers make for an eminently photographable piece, one that demands visitors genuflect, saying ‘on your knees,’ in a stentorian voice!” – Harry Parr, Director of Bompas & Parr

The installation will form part of part of the eclectic Merge Bankside, the annual arts festival in Bankside, London SE1. The festival will also host ‘The Riverside Stage’ showcasing songwriting and musical talent, a slapstick comedy show ‘Demonstration Gone Wrong’ and ‘Microcosms’ by artist Effie Paleologou, who will turn London’s pavements into her laboratory, recording specimens of discarded chewing gum.
Bompas & Parr are well-known in London for experience design, immersive research, architectural installations and contemporary food design. They started out in 2007 as ‘craft jellymakers’, using jelly for many quirky and boundary-pushing projects, such as a jelly lake on the top of Selfridge’s department store.
“Bompas & Parr have always brought an element of the weird and wonderful to MERGE, fusing art and science in unusual locations in Bankside.” – Caroline Jones, Curator of Merge Bankside
Merge Bankside is on from 24 September to 23 October 2016. Voice of God is on from 29 September to 2 October 2016, and entry is free.
