pentahotel Kassel – an ideal base to enjoy the renowned documenta art exhibition – is perfect for those who enjoy a little design kudos without the need for deep pockets.
Located a stone’s throw from Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe train station, it’s ideal for those arriving in Kassel by the Intercity-Express (ICE). On the approach to the hotel, the property’s design quirks are noticeable, with front signage that looks like a cinema, and a craftily-lit glass façade.
Inside, wooden floors, exposed brick and mismatched chairs give a homely impression. Virtual fireplaces, video game consoles and a pool table complete the picture. This is the ‘pentalounge’ and it’s a warm place with a community feeling to spend time. Grab a German beer there in the evening, or during the day, take advantage of the fresh teas served in stylish cast iron teapots. Breakfast is also served in the pentalounge, with a generous buffet of warm and cold breakfast foods.
Upstairs, 137 rooms are functional with small flairs of design. There are 32-inch flat-screen TVs, iPod or VGA connectors and specially designed rainshowers.
The pentahotel design philosophy has been dreamed up by Matteo Thun. The Italian architect and designer has worked for a huge range of influential brands. He’s responsible for espresso cups for Illy and Lavazza, he designs watches for Bulgari, and glasses for Campari. He’s also designed lighting systems for AEG and Artemide, and has worked for Missoni, Porsche Design, VitrA and Villeroy & Boch.
documenta: contemporary art takeover in Kassel
The documenta contemporary art exhibition is the world famous ‘museum of 100 days’ that takes place in Kassel every five years. It was founded by artist, architect and curator Arnold Bode in 1955, and has been attracting artists and art fans ever since. During documenta, art takes over the city of Kassel, with installations in venues and outdoors, while the population of the city swells to five times its usual size.
The next documenta (documenta 14) takes place in Kassel from 10 June to 17 September 2017.
