The five-yearly documenta exhibition of contemporary art in Kassel opens its Athens portion of the show today.
documenta – the open-air art museum of 100 days – usually takes place in the German city of Kassel in its entirety. This year marks a change in the exhibition’s format, as the documenta organisers are working across Kassel and Athens for the show.
The Athens part of documenta 14 runs from 8 April to 16 July 2017. The Kassel documenta 14 runs from 10 June to 17 September 2017.
documenta 14 in Athens will take place across the city in more 40 locations, including cultural institutions, cinemas and public squares. An impressive 160 international artists are taking part. While the events for the entirety of the Athens event are yet to be released, the schedule is available for inauguration week (8 to 15 April 2017).
Some of the highlights of inauguration week at documenta 14 (Athens) include:
Kolkata-born performance artist Nikhil Chopra, known for his performances involving extreme endurance, will be performing Drawing a Line through Landscape, which will be an ongoing event over two days.
The French and Italian Marie Cool and Fabio Balducci are known for a performance style closer to sculpture. They’ve performed across the world at venues from MoMA to the South London Gallery. At documenta 14, they’ll be performing daily actions at the Athens National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST) when the sun enters the gallery space.
Pakistan-born, London-based conceptual artist Rasheed Araeen will be cooking and eating in Kotzia Square, in his installation, Shamiyaana–Food for Thought: Thought for Change. Araeen originally trained as an engineer but has worked as an artist since the 1960s, and has exhibited at venues from the Tate in London to Aicon Gallery in New York.
Various noteworthy individuals will present a radio programme, Every Time A Ear di Soun. These include French-Norwegian poet and writer Caroline Bergwall and Swedish sound artist Ylva Bentancor. The radio show will be available across the world on Cannibal Radio, SW 15560 kHz, or in Kassel FM 90.4 MHz.
